Last night, I camped at Eagle's Aerie in the Sunol Wilderness. It was just above freezing outside, but I was snug in my bag ready to put out the light when I noticed my NeoAir Air Mattress was flat, and I was on the cold hard ground.I easily found the problem: a 1-inch tear in the top fabric.I'm not sure how it got there.I might have overinflated. No worries.I had bought the $9.95 patch kit when I got the mattress.I pulled it out and read the instructions:1) use the enclosed alcohol pad to clean the area- done 2) if you have a NeoAir mattress, skip step two of adding the Glue-O-Dots - I guess I carried those up the hill for nothing 3) peel the main patch from the backing and press it hard onto the mattress - done 4) (Optional) place an aluminum pot containing boiling water on the patch for 10 minutes to help it bond.- What?!

I decided I didn't want to risk the patch failing, so I got out of my nice warm sleeping bag, put my clothes back on, unpacked the stove and pot, hiked down to the water, filled the pot, hiked back, boiled the water and placed it on the patch for ten minutes.I decided to use a second pot under the patch to ensure a flat surface.

This story has a happy ending because the patch held, and I had a restful night.

I award only four stars for the optional pot of boiling water.Perhaps the patch would have worked without it.I don't know.

Save a little weight if you have the NeoAir, and toss the kit's superfluous square of six "Glue-O-Dots".
